Read It, Dude

Support

Help with reading selected text, choosing voices, playback controls, and browser permissions.

Contact support

Email support@glitchmodo.com. Include your browser and operating-system versions, Read It, Dude version, and a short description of what happened. Include a webpage address only if it is public and safe to share; do not send passwords, private reading text, or account information.

Trial, purchase, and restoring access

In the paid release, open Settings → Manage license / Restore purchase. Choose Start your 30-day trial to register with Freemius. No card is required and there is no automatic charge. Your trial starts at registration. Copy the license key from your email, return to the extension, and choose Activate license.

Choose Buy household license · $14.99 for the one-time household purchase, plus applicable tax. If you upgrade the same trial key, return and click Check license. If Freemius provides a different key, activate that purchased key instead.

On another computer, browser, or after reinstalling, enter the same key. Find my license / Restore purchase opens Freemius’s customer portal, where you can sign in or reset your password with your registration email. The trial’s original expiry is kept; reinstalling does not extend the same trial key.

A purchased license works offline after activation. During an outage, a saved trial continues until its original expiry. Stop, Settings, and downloaded voices remain available after expiry; starting another reading requires a purchase.

Refunds and household use

For a full refund within 30 days of purchase, email support@glitchmodo.com using your purchase email and order reference. Never send payment-card details or your full license key. A processed refund cancels the paid license.

The household license covers personal use by you and members of your household across unlimited household installations. For school-wide or company-wide deployment, contact us to discuss a separate agreement.

Start reading

Select text on an ordinary webpage, then use the Read It selection button, extension toolbar button, right-click menu, or your assigned keyboard shortcut. The selection button can be enabled or disabled in Settings.

Voices and speed

Open Settings to preview voices, choose a language, and save your preferred voice and reading speed. Read It, Dude includes female and male on-device voices for English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean, alongside voices supplied by your browser and device. English browser languages default to Read It, Dude - Female - English. If an online voice cannot play, check your connection or try a Read It, Dude voice. Word highlighting depends on available timing; passages without reliable word timing still play normally.

Firefox voice setup

After installation, a setup tab downloads approximately 244 MB of voice-model data from Glitchmodo’s public GitHub release. Progress is shown while each file is downloaded and verified. You can cancel and retry; completed files are kept. If you close the setup tab, open Settings and choose Set up Read It, Dude voices to continue. Browser voices remain available before setup completes.

Once ready, Read It, Dude voices work offline. Reset to defaults keeps the model files; uninstalling removes them. If a stored file is damaged, setup can download a verified replacement. Make sure your device has free storage.

Preparing speech

The first reading may display Warming up the voice system, followed by Generating the speech. Preparation takes longer on slower computers and with longer passages. You can stop preparation or start a different selection. For a playback error, try a short passage and include the displayed error message when contacting support.

Keyboard shortcuts

Open the Keyboard shortcuts section in Settings to see your assigned shortcut. Edge and Chrome open their browser shortcut settings; Firefox provides an editor inside Read It, Dude. A suggested shortcut may be unassigned if it conflicts with another extension.

When a page cannot be read

Check that your browser allows Read It, Dude access to the website. Browser settings pages, extension stores, PDFs, and some embedded or protected content cannot be read. Try a short selection on an ordinary webpage to check whether the issue is specific to the page or voice.

Playback controls

Use the compact player to pause, resume, stop, or change speed. Expand it for more controls, or use the close button to stop reading and hide the player. Settings lets you turn off the playback panel and restore defaults.
